Viewpoint Developer Central 2004 Revision

Scenario:
Viewpoint had a need for a web site that could be maintained by a very small group of professionals. It had to be easy to maintain, look great, have security based access, and most of all, create a relationship with it's developer community.

Solution:
The architecture of the back end system is Java Server Page based for secure pages, and Apache Server Side Include based for insecure pages. The navigation system is not only a testament to good usability, but highly customizable via an administration interface. While using the interface, an administrator can assign users to groups, give special page access to said groups and individuals, regroup, remove, or add new pages, tabs, or sub navigation elements, or approve applications for technology licenses.

By working with an in house team of JSP developers, dGraphx was able to design to visual, backend, front end, and information architecture of this web site in a relatively short amount of time. Reorganization of all information led to better task-based documentation, examples, and page organization.

Items of Interest:

  • Navigation is easy to use. DHTML based system is intuitive, with visual cues and natural user expectations.
  • Navigation is built for each of the seven user groups, since some groups have additional tabs and sub-menus available to them.
  • Searchable database of developers with user editable profiles.
  • DHTML based help system goes beyond simple "tool tips" to give useful information about technical definitions.
